Osprey Nest Update

January 16, 2025

There has been a lot of activity in the Osprey nest. I can’t tell if they have eggs or chicks because the nest is too high. I keep watching for little heads to poke up, but nothing yet. The parents are still adding sticks to the nest. Someone told me that he saw the male bring a large stick to the nest recently, and after the female wrestled with it for awhile, decided she didn’t like and flew away with the stick and dumped it into the woods.

I’ve read that it is usually the male that brings food to the nest. On a recent visit, I saw the male land in the nest with a fish, and the female took the fish and flew to the “Osprey Cafe” (the light pole on the Navy base). While the female was eating, the male flew away, and a Turkey Vulture started circling the nest. Fortunately the male saw it and chased the Vulture away.

Here are some photos from the their recent activities. The captions under the photos describe what is happening.

Here comes the male with dinner. You can see the female’s face poking up from the nest.
